Peru

The Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) in Lima, Peru, is a private non-profit university established in 1961. UPCH closely collaborates with the Ministry of Health and the Peruvian Direction of Prevention and Control of Tuberculosis (NTP). Dr. Carlos Zamudio serves as the Site PI for the FEND-TB consortium at the Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt (IMTAvH) at UPCH, while Dr. Ugarte has moved into the role of Co-PI from his new institution at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX. Since 2015 Dr. Ugarte has been the TB Research Unit Coordinator at IMTAvH, leading and overseeing several TB studies. Dr. Zamudio shares the same interest has been in ongoing studies on molecular TB diagnosis and urine LAM studies. He is also a member of the NTP National TB Expert Board which provides recommendations and guidance for evidence-based decision-making.

FEND participants are recruited from primary health centers in San Juan de Lurigancho and La Victoria Districts (TB prevalence 473/100,000 and 347.7/100,000, respectively) and from two hospitals. Cayetano Heredia Hospital is a tertiary referral hospital that in 2019 reported 5180 pulmonary TB suspects and 262 smear-positive cases. Huaycan Hospital is a secondary referral hospital that in 2019 reported 6578 pulmonary TB suspects and 157 smear-positive cases.
